First Audition for the Class of 2016 is this Friday, December 2!!

Theatre VCU students - Be sure to welcome and reassure the 43 potential Performance Majors and 3 potential Design Tech Majors who will be auditioning and interviewing for a place in our Class of 2016 on Friday from 12 noon - 6:00 pm.

Auditioning students and their families will be arriving by noon Friday afternoon. After a welcome, an explanation of how the day will proceed, and warm-ups for the performance applicants, the students will strut their stuff for our adjudicators.... remember how that felt?

A little reassurance from our current students would be a great gift to these (very nervous) high school seniors and transfers. Why not stop by PAC and wish them well?

ALSO:
Performance Majors - The Blogster found this in the email pile this morning:

Hello,

I am in the Photography and Film Department here at VCU. I'm working on a documentary for class and I could use the talent of one or some of the Theatre students. I'm looking for a male or female voice actor in their twenties or older to read an excerpt of Michael Drayton's poem Ode to the Virginian Voyage. I am very open in regards to voice types and range. I simply need someone who can take their time, enunciate, and establish a mood. This would require less than an hour of their time if they record with me or own their own. They will receive proper credits in the film and a copy when it is completed. I would like to get this done in the next week.

Thank you,
Lauren Cronan

A job op for Theatre VCU students

The bloginator received this e-mail, and thought you would be interested:

Greetings...

My name is Ahmed Hamada and I am a film maker and a journalist from Kuwait city - I'm a current PhD student in the Media, Art and Text program at VCU. As a class assignment, I am working on an interactive website that is a recreation of a Kuwaiti novel.

It is a form of hyper text that requires character vocal interaction. I am in need of 5 voice actors (3 male and 2 female performers) to provide the vocals for the character.

Recording should not take more than one session (2 hours roughly). I would be appreciated if I can find some interested actors before the deadline at Dec 5th. performers will be awarded $25 each for their efforts. However, this is a student non-profit project and volunteering is encouraged.

please email Ahmed.Hamada83@hotmail.com for more details.

Let us know if you get the gig!

Five minutes ago....

The last Sunday matinee of Grease
and the show stopper just brought the house down AGAIN!!

Friday, November 18, 2011

She's absolutely right....

A disappointed reader took the Bloginator to task. ..
Dear Bloginator (aka Blogster), While I understand the fact that Grease is quite a popular show with a bit of a longer running time, I must say I am a little disappointed with the lack of an Elephant gracing the blog. I mean all I am asking for is a full background stating that Elephant's Graveyard is clearly the prettiest production in all the land right now and that there will be a great void in everyone's life that doesn't see it.

I don't think I am asking too much here.

Now you know.
The Blogster is grateful that there is a reader out there - keeping things straight....
oh...
by the way...
The Blogster knows what the Masked Ball theme will be this year....
Anyone care to find out...?

Do not miss the tragically beautiful Elephant Graveyard - this weekend only.

Who will choose this years Masquerade Ball theme??

YOU!

Tomorrow the hard-working Masquerade Ball committee will have its FIRST bakesale in the PAC lobby starting at 11:00 am.

Bring $1.00 (really. one lousy dollar) and buy a bag of cookies or a cupcake or a big fat brownie AND also receive a HUG, a fortune, and the right to vote for one of THREE themes for the Friday May 4, 2012 Masquerade Ball.

The themes to choose from are:

1. The Moonlights and Magnolias Ball - Inspired by the Spielberg film Lincoln - this would be a celebration of old Richmond. Think: cotillons, hoop skirts, gentlemen callers, rock out those 19th century blues!

2. The Great Gatsby Ball - Think 1920's speakeasy. Flappers and gents in tuxes (maybe a hint of zoot suits). Prohibition, Betty Boop, and feather boas. 23 skidoo baby.

3 The Black and Gold Ball - Go VCU!!! Need we say more??

Now it's up to you!

Come by and buy a treat for a great cause. (Last year's masquerade ball cost almost $800.00)

If you would like to vote and can't come by the Bakesale tomorrow - then go ahead and email Glynn at gmbrannan@vcu.edu with your vote.

We will announce the theme on Monday, November 28th here on the Blog!!

WELCOME Mr. Austin James Kocher Perry!

Robert Perry (Theatre VCU Director of Lighting) and his lovely exhausted wife, Cindy, and very excited big brother Jack are pleased to announce the entrance of Austin who was born at 4:08pm November 15, 2012!

According to big brother Jack - both mom and baby are doing well!!

Join the Bloginator in a rousing
"Welcome Austin!!!"

But first... can we just brag a little bit...?

Style Weekly loved Grease!!

Go here to read about "Cat Wheelehan’s excellent voice" or "Antonio Tillman shines in yet another show-stopping performance" - Drew Sease and Katie Ford got some very nice nods as well.

Congratulations to the cast and crew!

Oh... lest we forget some other marvelous Theatre VCU honors:
Amy Hutton (Stage Management Professor)
AND
Robert Perry (Lighting Design Director)
were 2 of only 6 winners from the School of the Arts of the
Dean’s Exploratory Research Grant - which provides seed funding to support research explorations at the development stage where no definite outcomes can be predicted at the time the application is submitted.  Grant range is up to $5,000.

A VERY big deal for Theatre VCU all the way around!!

(This is what happens when you have "raw talent" - at least that's what Style Weekly thinks!!)

Overheard at the Hodges....

Honest-to-God quotes from our audience after seeing Grease!

"I can't believe those were students..."

"where do they find all that energy?"

"I'm definitely coming back to see it again..."

"That little girl with the Twinkies was hysterical...."

"Who was that actor who channeled James Brown?..."

"That was a BLAST!!!!"

Don't take their word for it....

From David Leong: you dont want to forget these events - Mark your calendars now!

The Bloginator can say...."I knew him when..."

Once more congrats to Mike Farmer - in Orlando, as we speak, enjoying the long weekend as "one of six students from around the world chosen to participate this weekend in an all-expense-paid trip to the Lighting Design International (LDI) tradeshow in Orlando, Fla."

Read ALL about it here.

Scary • Dark • Classic • Haunting Medea

[vampire]Medea opens Thursday, October 27th and runs for only five performances at VCU's Shafer Street Theatre.  Running at about ninety minutes, [v]M is packed with blood, violence, shouting, tenderness, and poetry.

It is a world premier production at VCU crafted almost entirely in the theatre department and featuring original music.  With a cast ranging from sophomores to second-year graduate students, and directed by Augustin J Correro, [v]M juxtaposes modern sensibilities about the value of women, innocence, fidelity, and other-ness with Shakespeare's immortal language and Euripides' timeless story...all set in a world of darkness rife with things that go bump in the night!

Check out [vampire]Medea for a great treat on your Halloween Weekend!

Performances are:
Thurs Oct 27 @ 8pm
Fri Oct 28 @ 8pm & 11:59 (show time 12:30, pre-show reception from midnight)
Sat Oct 29 @ 8pm
Sun Oct 30 @ 2pm

Theatre VCU shined for the Stars!!

For the last couple of weekends our undergraduate Performance Majors had two opportunities to entertain the university community.

First was the Gala celebrating President Rao's inauguration - mentioned in the blog here for the first time.

Here is just one of the letters we received about that celebration:

David and Patti, Your students gave a terrific performance at the Inaugural Gala! Thanks so much for sharing their multiple talents with us.
Michael Davis
Professor and Interim Dean
School of Education
Virginia Commonwealth University

AND...
I want to thank you for such wonderful entertainment last evening. Your song selection and choreography were truly outstanding.... And our students were fabulous.

Thank you for all that you do to make VCU such a special place, and many thanks for the hard work that went into the production last night.

Bravo!
Beverly J. Warren, Ed.D., Ph.D., FACSM
Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs

Then last Friday Theatre VCU supplied the entertainment for the Alumni Stars Banquet held at the Sheraton.

Here's what we heard from Professor Davis about that evening's entertainmnent:

WOW! Your students were fantastic! The folks at my table (including Dale Kalkoffen, the SOE Alumni Star) could not stop talking about their talent and energy. My wife and I are looking forward to Grease.
Michael Davis
Professor and Interim Dean
School of Education
Virginia Commonwealth University

AND...

On behalf of the MCV Alumni Association, thank you both so much for the amazing performance which you all produced for the alumni stars program on Friday night. I heard so many compliments from our guests who were completely blown away by the flawless numbers perfectly executed by your talented students. The personalization of the songs really added a special, memorable touch to the evening. It was great meeting you, David and it was great seeing you again, Patti.

Thanks again for making our alumni associations look so good....

Appreciative,
Barbara J. Payton
Executive Director
Medical College of Virginia Alumni Association of VCU

Congratulations to Patti D'Beck, Justin Amellio and all our students for their hard work!
